Telangana Celebrates Bonalu Festival

The Bonalu festival, one of Telangana's most revered and colourful folk festivals, is being celebrated with immense devotion in honour of Goddess Mahakali. The festival is observed primarily during the Hindu month of Ashada, which falls in July and August.

This year, the month-long Bonalu festival in Telangana commenced on July 16 at the Golconda Fort and will run until August 10. Bare-bodied and smeared with turmeric, he leads the procession with energetic dances, rhythmic drumbeats, and traditional performances, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

The festival has a rich history, tracing its origins to the early 19th century when a military battalion from Hyderabad prayed to the Goddess Mahakali in Ujjain during a severe plague and cholera outbreak. After the epidemic subsided, the returning soldiers fulfilled their vow by establishing a shrine and installing an idol of the Goddess.

Families also decorate their homes, prepare festive meals, and seek blessings for prosperity, health, and happiness. The festival is an expression of gratitude to the goddess for protecting people from epidemics and ensuring their well-being.
