Mumbai Suburban Rail Disrupted By Rain
Heavy rain causes waterlogging, landslides and OHE failures. Train services hit across multiple sections.

Mumbai's suburban rail network was severely disrupted on Monday due to heavy rainfall and multiple incidents of waterlogging, landslides, and overhead equipment (OHE) failures. The disruptions occurred across key sections such as Vasai–Virar–Palghar and the Karjat–Lonavala ghat route, causing delays, cancellations, and diversions throughout the day.
According to railway authorities, train services between Vasai, Virar, and Palghar were severely affected after waterlogging submerged tracks at around 9:04 AM. Limited movement towards Vasai resumed at around 11:00 AM after water levels reduced, but services continued to remain irregular with delays and cancellations.
In another incident, a plastic sheet became entangled in the OHE near Vikhroli at around 11:50 AM, disrupting train operations. Railway staff promptly removed the obstruction, restoring normal OHE functioning by approximately 12:11 PM and allowing train movement to resume.
A landslide occurred near Thakurwadi in the Karjat–Lonavala ghat section at around 2:00 AM, affecting all three railway lines. The incident significantly disrupted rail traffic, prompting restoration work and causing widespread delays to several passenger and freight services.
Other incidents of landslides and OHE failures were reported near Monkey Hill, Lonavala Ghat, and Khandala Ghat, disrupting rail connectivity and causing cancellations, diversions, and regulations of several Mumbai–Pune trains.
The disruptions had a significant impact on commuters, with many facing delays and cancellations throughout the day. Railway authorities worked to restore services, but the disruptions caused inconvenience to thousands of passengers.
The heavy rainfall also prompted the BMC to issue a leptospirosis alert for Mumbai residents, advising preventive treatment within 72 hours. The alert warned of the risk of waterborne diseases and urged residents to take precautions.
The railway authorities are working to restore normal services, but the disruptions are expected to continue for some time. Commuters are advised to check the latest updates before traveling and to plan their journeys accordingly.
In terms of the impact on Mumbai residents, the disruptions to the suburban rail network caused significant inconvenience, with many facing delays and cancellations. The disruptions also affected businesses, with some reporting losses due to the disruptions. The railway authorities are working to minimize the impact and restore normal services as soon as possible.
Looking ahead, the railway authorities are expected to take measures to prevent such disruptions in the future, including upgrading the infrastructure and improving the maintenance of the rail network. The authorities are also expected to work with the BMC to ensure that the city's drainage system is able to handle heavy rainfall, reducing the risk of waterlogging and landslides.
