Bhopal City Bus Expansion: 64 Buses On 16 Routes

Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL), a subsidiary of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, has announced plans to expand the city's bus services under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The new plan, prepared under the PM Bus Sewa initiative, will see 64 buses operate on 16 new and previously closed routes in Bhopal.

The routes will cover not only Bhopal but also several surrounding areas and districts. BCLL has invited separate tenders for the 16 routes, with four buses proposed for each route. The new PPP model will allow private operators to deploy their own buses, which do not have to be electric.

Unlike the centrally operated electric buses already running under the first phase of the scheme, the new PPP model will allow private operators to run services with their own vehicles. Operators will pay BCLL a monthly revenue amount, and the operator offering the highest revenue will receive permission to operate a particular route.

In return, BCLL will provide space at its depots for parking the buses. The proposed arrangement is intended to prevent a single company from gaining control over all the routes and to provide opportunities to multiple local operators.

The 16 routes will connect various parts of the city, including Ratibad, RNTU, Sukhi Sewania, Bhojpur, and Sehore. The services are expected to begin from November, if the tendering process proceeds as planned.

BCLL CEO Anju Arun Kumar said that the initiative is expected to improve connectivity between Bhopal, its outskirts, and nearby towns while bringing local private bus operators into the city's public transport network.

The PPP model is already being implemented in Indore, and Bhopal is following suit. The move is expected to enhance the city's public transport system and provide more opportunities for local bus operators.
