Google Launches AI Initiatives in India

Google has unveiled a range of AI initiatives in India, focusing on education, healthcare, and language access. The announcements were made at the I/O Connect India 2026 developer conference.

The initiatives include a free AI training curriculum for students, called AI Research Foundations, which is a 56-hour programme covering AI research methods, machine learning, and large language models. The programme has already drawn over 38,000 learners globally and will be available in India through the Indian Institute of Science and NASSCOM's Future Skills Prime platform.

Google has also launched a new tool called ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered assistant designed to help teachers plan lessons and design classroom activities for Atal Tinkering Labs. The tool will be launched in 100 schools this year, with a long-term goal of reaching 10,000 schools.

In the healthcare sector, Google has partnered with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to expand the use of its open-source MedGemma models for building AI tools for India-specific health conditions. AIIMS researchers are developing models for leprosy detection and sexual and reproductive health, using medical images and text inputs.

Google has also announced expanded Indian language support for its Gemini Live platform and new data localization options for enterprises. The company has framed these moves as part of its commitment to India's AI ecosystem.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has begun incorporating the AI Research Foundations curriculum into its academic programmes. NASSCOM will make the curriculum available through its Future Skills Prime platform, which is supported by the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund for the Asia-Pacific region.

The rollout of these initiatives is being supported by local partners, including the network AVPN. Google's announcements are seen as an extension of its existing partnerships and pilot programmes in India, rather than entirely new products.

The company's commitment to India's AI ecosystem is expected to have a significant impact on the country's education and healthcare sectors. With the launch of these initiatives, Google aims to provide Indian students and developers with the skills and tools needed to succeed in the AI industry.

The expansion of Google's AI initiatives in India is also expected to contribute to the country's growing AI ecosystem. India has been actively promoting the development of AI and has launched several initiatives to support the growth of the industry.

Overall, Google's announcements are a significant step forward for India's AI ecosystem and are expected to have a positive impact on the country's education and healthcare sectors.

The launch of these initiatives is also expected to create new opportunities for Indian developers and startups, who can leverage Google's AI tools and platforms to build innovative solutions for the Indian market.

In conclusion, Google's AI initiatives in India are a significant development for the country's AI ecosystem. With the launch of these initiatives, Google aims to provide Indian students and developers with the skills and tools needed to succeed in the AI industry and contribute to the growth of the country's AI ecosystem.
