Bhopal School for Visually Impaired Protests Teacher Shortage

The Government Higher Secondary School for the Visually Impaired in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, witnessed a protest by its students on Wednesday. The students, who include visually and hearing-impaired children, are demanding better facilities and more teachers.

The school, which has 190 students from Class 1 to 12, currently has only three teachers. This severe shortage of teaching staff has resulted in irregular classes, with some teachers spending more time on their mobile phones than teaching.

One of the students, Ansh Rajput, who has been studying at the school since 2018, expressed his concern about the lack of basic knowledge of mathematics and English. The students have also raised concerns about the computer laboratory, hostel facilities, cleanliness, food quality, sports activities, and transportation.

Some hostel residents alleged that they are not allowed to go outside for sports in the evening. Additionally, girls do not have a separate hostel facility, which is a major concern for the students.

The situation is particularly concerning for hearing-impaired students, as teachers do not know sign language and there is no interpreter available. This lack of communication support makes it difficult for students to receive education or explain their grievances.

The students have submitted 15 demands, including an independent inquiry into their 26 complaints. The school principal, Mohammad Irfan, stated that he took charge on March 17 and no student or parent had submitted a formal complaint to him. He also mentioned that three teachers who had come on deputation from Chhattisgarh were called back by their state government, which created a shortage.

The school is run by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, and it is their responsibility to ensure that the students receive proper education and facilities. The students' protest highlights the need for immediate attention to their demands and the provision of better facilities and more teachers.
