Rajnath Singh Launches ₹3,500 Crore Defence Projects

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for five brownfield expansion projects worth ₹3,500 crore of the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Ltd in Kolkata on Sunday.

The projects are expected to boost India's shipbuilding capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign countries. Addressing the gathering, Singh highlighted the rapid developments taking place in shipbuilding technology and expressed confidence that India can become a global shipbuilding hub.

Singh also spoke about the challenges faced by the shipbuilding industry, where large warships and advanced commercial vessels take 15-20 years to develop. He noted that by the time a ship is designed and developed, some technology may become outdated.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, also spoke on the occasion and slammed the previous governments for not cooperating with the central government. He expressed happiness that Bengal is progressing under the current double-engine government.

Notably, GRSE had signed lease agreements with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) for two small shipyards on either bank of the Hooghly along with a 32-acre riverside property at Raichak.
