India's Space Economy To Reach $44 Billion By 2033

India's space economy is projected to grow from $8.4 billion to $44 billion by 2033, according to Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

This growth is expected to be driven by the private sector and startups, with the space economy expanding nearly fivefold in the next decade. Shekhawat made this announcement in Ahmedabad on Sunday, as India marked the third 'National Space Day'.

The minister said that the expansion of the space economy should not be measured only by its financial value, but also by India's ability to develop advanced technologies, create high-skilled employment, and find technology-based solutions to domestic challenges.

The reforms introduced in 2020 have opened greater opportunities for private companies, startups, and industries in the space sector. Shekhawat noted that these changes have not diminished the role of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), but have created an opportunity to broaden the country's capabilities.

Private participation is creating opportunities in satellite manufacturing, launch services, components, ground support, space applications, and data analytics. However, the minister also stressed the need to address emerging challenges, including space debris, cyber security, data security, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The National Space Day programme was organised by ISRO's Space Applications Centre, under the theme 'Towards Viksit Bharat: Innovating, Collaborating and Aspiring to Global Space Leadership'.

The event highlighted India's progress in the space sector, with over 440 startups, nearly six times growth in private investment, 399 foreign satellites launched, and over 300 global space partnerships.

The minister emphasized the importance of innovation, collaboration, and global leadership in India's space ambitions, with young people at the centre of all three.
