Thane Hoarding Collapses, Police Book Agency and Engineer

A major hoarding collapse occurred in Thane's Subhash Nagar area on July 6, leading to swift action from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and local police. The collapse of the cantilever-type advertising hoarding, which was erected on a road divider, fortunately resulted in no casualties.

The TMC has revoked the permission granted to the advertising agency responsible for the hoarding, citing safety concerns. Furthermore, a case has been registered against the agency and the structural engineer involved under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for endangering public safety.

The advertising agency had been granted permission to erect the hoarding as part of the TMC's intersection beautification scheme. Despite submitting a fresh structural stability certificate on June 6, the hoarding collapsed, prompting a detailed inquiry into the matter.

In response to the incident, the TMC has launched a citywide safety audit of all authorised hoardings. During the initial inspection, two hoardings were found to be in a dangerous condition and were immediately removed. The TMC has issued strict instructions to all advertisement licensees to ensure the structural strength of their hoardings and to dismantle advertising sheets during the monsoon season as required.

This incident is not isolated, as a similar hoarding collapse occurred on the Eastern Express Highway in Thane, and a massive birthday banner collapsed from a foot overbridge near Mulund Check Naka. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the TMC to remove all illegal hoardings and conduct structural audits of all large advertising billboards in the city.

The need for safety audits is underscored by a tragic incident in May 2024, where a hoarding collapse at a petrol pump in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area claimed 17 lives. The TMC's actions aim to prevent such incidents and ensure public safety in Thane.

The citywide safety audit and strict instructions to advertisement licensees demonstrate the TMC's commitment to addressing safety concerns. The incident highlights the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of public structures to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of citizens.

In the context of Thane's urban development, the intersection beautification scheme aims to enhance the city's aesthetic appeal. However, the scheme must be balanced with safety considerations to prevent incidents like the hoarding collapse.

The TMC's response to the incident serves as a reminder of the need for effective governance and safety protocols in urban planning. As Thane continues to grow and develop, it is essential for the civic body to prioritize public safety and take proactive measures to prevent accidents.

In conclusion, the hoarding collapse in Thane has prompted a swift response from the TMC and police, highlighting the importance of safety audits and public safety protocols in urban planning. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for effective governance and regular inspections to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of citizens.
