MLA Prashant Thakur Demands Halt To Land Acquisition For Virar-Alibag Corridor

MLA Prashant Thakur has demanded an immediate suspension of the compulsory acquisition of farmers' land in Panvel and Uran talukas for the Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor.

In a letter to Deputy Collector Janardan Kasar, Thakur urged the administration not to undertake any further land acquisition proceedings until a final decision is reached at the government level on compensation for affected farmers.

He also warned of an intense agitation if the process is not stopped. Land belonging to farmers in Panvel and Uran talukas is being acquired for the Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor.

Thakur had earlier written to Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule seeking an increase in compensation rates. The government had assured fair compensation during a meeting on July 8, 2026.

However, Thakur has expressed strong displeasure over information that the compulsory acquisition process is continuing despite the assurance.

Farmers' land is an important source of their livelihood as well as their future financial security, said Thakur. It would not be appropriate to proceed with compulsory acquisition before a final decision is taken on compensation and without taking the affected farmers into confidence.

He said the continued acquisition process was creating confusion, stress and resentment among affected farmers. According to Thakur, the assurance given at the government-level meeting must be implemented effectively and affected farmers must receive fair and just compensation.

Until the government takes a final decision on compensation and completes the necessary action, the compulsory land acquisition process being undertaken by the Deputy Collector's office should be stopped immediately, Thakur said in his letter.

He also urged the Deputy Collector to immediately bring the matter to the attention of senior authorities and take necessary steps to ensure effective implementation of the decision taken at the government meeting.

Thakur warned that if the acquisition process is not suspended, he would be compelled to launch an intense agitation outside the concerned office in support of the legitimate rights of affected farmers.

He also stated that the administration would be responsible for any situation arising from the agitation. The Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor is a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in the region.

However, the project has been facing opposition from farmers who are concerned about the acquisition of their land. The issue of compensation has been a major point of contention, with farmers demanding fair and just compensation for their land.

The government's assurance of fair compensation has not been implemented effectively, leading to confusion and resentment among affected farmers. The suspension of the land acquisition process is crucial to address the concerns of the farmers and ensure that they receive fair compensation for their land.

The matter highlights the need for effective communication and implementation of government decisions to avoid conflicts and ensure that the rights of affected parties are protected.

The demand for suspension of land acquisition is significant for the region, as it affects the livelihood and future security of farmers. The government must take immediate action to address the concerns of the farmers and ensure that they receive fair and just compensation for their land.

This issue is a classic example of how infrastructure development can sometimes lead to conflicts with local communities. It is essential for the government to balance the need for development with the need to protect the rights of affected parties.

In this case, the government must take a proactive approach to address the concerns of the farmers and ensure that they receive fair compensation for their land. The suspension of the land acquisition process is a crucial step in this direction.

The matter is being closely watched by the local community, and any further developments are likely to have significant implications for the region.

The government's response to the demand for suspension of land acquisition will be critical in determining the outcome of this issue.

It is essential for the government to prioritize the concerns of the farmers and ensure that they receive fair and just compensation for their land.

Only time will tell how this issue will be resolved, but one thing is certain - the government must take immediate action to address the concerns of the farmers and ensure that they receive fair compensation for their land.
