Chhattisgarh Elephants Migrate to Madhya Pradesh Due to Habitat Loss

Rapid development in Chhattisgarh has led to the displacement of elephants, who are now migrating to Madhya Pradesh in search of suitable habitats.

This migration is not a new phenomenon, as elephants have been seasonal visitors to the state's border areas. However, they are now settling permanently in these areas.

According to Taruna Verma, the North Shahdol divisional forest officer, the West Biohari area has seen a permanent presence of several elephants over the past one-and-a-half years. The area has become a suitable habitat for these elephants, with dense bamboo cover and adequate water availability.

Initially, around 20 elephants arrived in the area, and with the birth of five calves, the total elephant population has increased to 25. This makes North Shahdol the second-largest permanent habitat for elephants that have migrated from Chhattisgarh, after the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, which is home to around 70 elephants.

The presence of such a large number of elephants has posed a significant challenge for the local residents. Elephants are attracted to aromatic cereals and mahua stored in kuccha houses, and driven by hunger, they can damage these structures.

To mitigate this issue, residents living in kuccha houses are being encouraged to shift to pucca houses. Forest teams have been deployed to track elephant movements, which generally remain confined to forest areas with adequate food and water.

Only one elephant, identified as a visitor from the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, has been found involved in damaging kuccha houses in villages.

The migration of elephants from Chhattisgarh to Madhya Pradesh highlights the need for conservation efforts to protect these animals and their habitats.

The loss of habitat due to rapid development activities is a significant threat to elephant populations, and it is essential to strike a balance between development and conservation.

In the case of the West Biohari area, the presence of elephants has also brought attention to the need for sustainable forest management and the protection of wildlife habitats.
