Mumbai Metro 4 Clears Safety Inspection

Mumbai's Metro 4 project has achieved a significant milestone with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) completing its inspection of the pit line on the 10.5-km Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch.

The inspection, which was completed a few days ago, is a crucial step towards commencing services on the first phase of Metro 4 in Thane. The MMRDA is now awaiting the CMRS report, which will determine whether any modifications or additional safety measures are required before the project proceeds towards final approval.

The pit line has assumed greater importance as the Metro 4 car shed is yet to be completed. In the absence of a fully operational depot, the facility will provide an interim arrangement for carrying out essential maintenance and inspections of metro trains. The facility can be used for examining components located beneath the rakes, including wheels, braking systems, suspension and other technical equipment.

The CMRS inspection focused on establishing whether the arrangement can be safely used for routine maintenance of metro rakes. The 10.5-km corridor had earlier cleared the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) testing in June, which covered key systems, including train speed, signalling, safety mechanisms, rolling stock and track-related equipment.

With the RDSO certification completed, the project has moved into the final stage of safety scrutiny by the CMRS. The CMRS report is now awaited before the authority proceeds with any recommendations and subsequent approvals.

The first phase of Metro 4 will cover eight stations, including Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Tikuji-ni-Wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, and Gaimukh. The line is expected to provide an alternative public transport option for commuters in Thane, particularly those travelling along the increasingly congested Ghodbunder Road corridor.

MMRDA is expecting to secure the necessary approvals to commence operations around Diwali or by the end of 2026, subject to completion of the safety and regulatory process. Metro 4 and Metro 4A form part of the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Gaimukh corridor.

The completion of Metro 4 will have a significant impact on the daily commute of thousands of Mumbaikars, providing a faster and more convenient mode of transportation. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, making it a welcome addition to the city's public transportation system.

In conclusion, the clearance of the CMRS inspection is a major milestone for the Metro 4 project, and MMRDA is now one step closer to commencing operations. With the expected launch around Diwali, commuters in Thane can look forward to a more efficient and reliable public transportation system.
