4,052 Indian Seafarers Repatriated From Gulf Region Amid Conflict

The Indian government has repatriated 4,052 seafarers from the Gulf region amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, informed Parliament on Friday that the repatriation was carried out to ensure the safety and security of Indian seafarers.

The minister stated that the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has been updating its advisories to enhance the safety and security of Indian seafarers in the region.

In view of the renewed attacks on merchant vessels, the Directorate General of Shipping has mandated the implementation of full International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code security measures.

The government has also advised against the deployment of Indian seafarers on voyages transiting through the Gulf region.

An advisory has been issued for Indian and foreign flagged vessels carrying Indian seafarers operating in the Black Sea, requiring enhanced caution and strict adherence to security advisories.

The government has taken several measures to safeguard Indian seafarers, including the establishment of a dedicated 24x7 Control Room and the issuance of a Situation Report (SITREP) every 24 hours.

The DGMA has also developed an integrated digital platform with dedicated 24x7 Marine Casualty Reporting, Crisis Management and Seafarer Grievance Redressal modules.

The evolving maritime security situation is being continuously monitored through the DG Communication Centre (DGCOMM) in coordination with the Indian Navy and other concerned stakeholders.
