MPCB Orders BMC To Boost Beach Cleaning In Mumbai

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to undertake a comprehensive survey of all beaches across Mumbai and deploy necessary machinery, technology, and manpower for effective cleaning.

A review meeting was held at the BMC headquarters, attended by MPCB Chairman Siddhesh Kadam, Additional Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma, and senior officials. The meeting assessed the ongoing beach-cleaning drive and addressed environmental concerns.

The cleanliness at various beaches, including Juhu, Gorai, Versova, Dadar, and others, was reviewed in detail. Following the assessment, Kadam directed the BMC to conduct on-ground inspections and strengthen resources wherever required.

The meeting also highlighted the issue of plastic and other waste flowing through drains into the sea, calling for immediate intervention. Kadam directed the BMC to intensify enforcement against single-use plastic and ensure strict implementation of the ban on thermocol and plastic flowers during Ganeshotsav.

Discussions also covered solid-waste management at Deonar and Kanjurmarg, sewage-related issues, and the scientific disposal of construction and demolition debris.

The urgency of the clean-up comes amid significant waste accumulation along Mumbai's coastline during the monsoon. In a special beach-cleaning drive conducted last month, the BMC cleared 2,498.66 metric tonnes of waste, including plastic, thermocol, and wooden debris.

Juhu recorded the highest waste collection at 1,825 metric tonnes, followed by Versova, Dadar-Mahim, Chimbai-Waringpada, Madh-Marve, Gorai, and Girgaon Chowpatty.

Special beach-cleaning teams have been deployed during the monsoon to regularly inspect the coastline, remove waste washed ashore by tides, and ensure its scientific disposal.
