Pune Traffic Signal Timers Fail, Causing Commuter Frustration

A major issue has been reported in Pune, where Traffic Signal Countdown Timers (TSCTs) have stopped working at several key intersections, leaving daily commuters frustrated and uncertain.

The problem has been noticed at prominent junctions such as Laxmi Narayan Chowk, Alka Chowk, and Swargate Chowk, among others. The countdown displays, which indicate the remaining time before a signal changes, have either gone blank or stopped functioning altogether.

According to commuters, the absence of these timers has created uncertainty, especially during peak traffic hours. Many commuters rely on the timers to judge whether to slow down, prepare to move, or switch off their vehicle engines during longer red signals. Without the countdown, drivers are often left guessing how long they have to wait, leading to impatience, unnecessary honking, and confusion at junctions.

Rohan Kulkarni, an IT professional, travels through Laxmi Narayan Chowk every day for work and finds the non-functional timer irritating during rush hour. He said that earlier, the countdown timer helped him know exactly how much time was left at the signal, but now he has no idea whether the wait will be 20 seconds or two minutes.

College student Sneha Patil, who frequently crosses Alka Chowk, said that the countdown timer made traffic movement more predictable. Since it stopped working, many motorists start moving before the green signal or become impatient, increasing the chances of accidents.

Commercial vehicle driver Mohammed Shaikh said that the problem is more severe for professional drivers, as they spend hours on Pune's roads. The timers helped them plan their movement and reduce fuel wastage by switching off the engine during longer waits.

Priya Deshmukh, a resident of Bibvewadi, regularly passes through Swargate and said that the authorities invested in these systems to improve traffic management. If they remain non-functional for weeks, it reflects poor maintenance. The issue should be addressed immediately.

The Pune traffic police have taken note of the issue. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakare said that they will inspect the malfunctioning systems and take appropriate action.

The non-functional traffic signal timers in Pune highlight the need for regular maintenance and upkeep of traffic infrastructure. The city's commuters rely on these systems to navigate the roads safely and efficiently.

The issue also underscores the importance of traffic discipline and the role that technology can play in improving traffic management. The countdown timers were installed to help motorists anticipate signal changes and improve traffic discipline. Their failure has created uncertainty and frustration among commuters, emphasizing the need for prompt action to address the issue.

In conclusion, the failure of traffic signal timers in Pune is a significant issue that affects the daily lives of commuters. It is essential for the authorities to address the problem promptly and ensure that the timers are functional to improve traffic management and reduce frustration among motorists.

This issue is not just a local problem but also reflects the broader challenges of maintaining and upgrading traffic infrastructure in Indian cities. As cities like Pune continue to grow and develop, it is crucial to invest in modern traffic management systems and ensure their proper maintenance to improve the commuting experience for residents.
