Bhopal Digging Puts 10,000 Students At Risk

In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation's (BMC) ongoing excavation work during the monsoon season has raised concerns over road safety, particularly for the 10,000 coaching students in the city.

Despite claims of stopping fresh excavation on main roads, digging work continues in several locations, including MP Nagar, where an AMRUT 2.0 sewage line is being constructed near the railway tracks beneath Chetak Bridge.

The excavation has left the road covered in mud, posing a risk to thousands of coaching students and daily commuters who use this route. The situation is ironic, given that the BMC fire department is conducting safety checks at coaching centres to protect the students.

The MP Nagar road has turned into a muddy stretch after rainfall, with soil and mud spreading across the road, and barricades restricting movement. Two-wheeler riders face an increased risk of slipping, and the traffic congestion is a major concern throughout the day.

In MP Nagar Zone-2, some excavated stretches were restored by filling them with soil, but the rain has turned these stretches into muddy patches, contributing to the traffic congestion.

The construction work on the main road in Rachna Nagar has been underway for over 15 days, and the rainfall has washed soil from the excavated roadside areas onto the road and into residents' doorsteps, making it difficult for people to move out of their houses.

The situation has raised questions over the BMC's pre-monsoon instructions, which stated that fresh excavation on major roads was to be stopped and existing roads repaired before the rains.

When contacted, BMC superintending engineer Udit Garg said that the corporation had imposed a ban on digging up main roads before the onset of the monsoon and claimed that no road excavation is currently taking place in Rachna Nagar or Gautam Nagar.

However, the ongoing excavation work and the resulting muddy roads and traffic congestion suggest that the BMC's instructions are not being followed, putting the safety of coaching students and daily commuters at risk.
