BMC Issues Safety Advisory For Coastal Road Tunnel

A day after a car caught fire inside the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released a list of tunnel safety instructions to be followed in case of an emergency.

The safety instructions have been posted on the BMC's social media handles and include 12 key points for motorists to follow. These instructions are designed to help motorists stay safe in the event of an emergency and to prevent panic.

The 12-point safety measures include stopping the vehicle safely with the engine switched off, leaving the keys inside the vehicle, and not making a U-turn or reversing inside the tunnel. Motorists are also advised to use the Emergency Telephone System installed every 100 metres inside the tunnel and to stay calm and listen to the Public Address System.

In the event of a fire, motorists are advised to use the fire extinguishers installed inside the tunnel, if required. They should also follow the directional arrows and locate the nearest cross passage, and open the cross passage using the panic button. Motorists should then walk in the direction of the exit and await assistance from the emergency response team.

The BMC has also informed that, in case of any emergency, the 24x7 control room can be contacted on 7738989116 or by dialling 101 for the Fire Brigade. The corporation has appealed to all motorists travelling through the Coastal Road South tunnel to stay alert and follow the prescribed safety instructions.

The incident that prompted the release of these safety instructions occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when an SUV caught fire inside the northbound Coastal Road tunnel. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, but the smoke generated inside the tunnel caused panic among motorists, many of whom were seen running towards the tunnel exit after abandoning their vehicles.

The BMC's safety advisory is a timely reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies and following proper safety protocols. By following these instructions, motorists can help prevent panic and stay safe in the event of an emergency.

The Coastal Road tunnel is a critical transportation artery in Mumbai, and the BMC's safety advisory is an important step in ensuring the safety of motorists who use it. The corporation's efforts to educate motorists on safety procedures and to provide emergency response services are commendable, and will help to prevent accidents and minimize the impact of emergencies.

In the coming days, the BMC is likely to continue to monitor the situation and take additional steps to ensure the safety of motorists using the Coastal Road tunnel. For now, motorists are advised to stay alert and follow the prescribed safety instructions to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

The release of the safety advisory is a significant development in the aftermath of the SUV fire incident, and it highlights the BMC's commitment to ensuring the safety of motorists in Mumbai. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential that the BMC and other authorities take proactive steps to prevent accidents and minimize the impact of emergencies.

In conclusion, the BMC's safety advisory for the Coastal Road tunnel is an important step in ensuring the safety of motorists in Mumbai. By following the prescribed safety instructions and staying alert, motorists can help prevent panic and stay safe in the event of an emergency.
