840 Companies Shut in Nashik in 5 Years

Nashik has seen the closure of 840 private companies in the last five financial years, according to data presented by the Central government. This revelation comes at a time when Nashik is being developed as a major industrial hub in Maharashtra.

The data also shows that other cities in Maharashtra have seen a significant number of company closures, with 6,433 in Pune, 4,704 in Thane, 12,009 in Mumbai City, 1,478 in Nagpur, 822 in Raigad, and 654 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

MP Rajabhau Waje raised concerns about the closures and the impact on workers in Parliament. He questioned whether workers received their legally mandated dues, including provident fund, gratuity, and pending wages, after the closure of companies. Waje also sought information on any special rehabilitation scheme available for affected workers.

However, the Centre clarified that it does not maintain data on workers affected by the closure of private companies. In cases where a company enters insolvency or liquidation proceedings, workers' claims are dealt with through the applicable legal process.

Despite 36,211 companies being recorded under this category in Maharashtra, the Centre does not have consolidated data on the actual number of workers affected. Waje also drew attention to the broader picture of industrial growth and employment generation in Maharashtra, questioning how many new industries and companies were established in the state during the past five years.

He sought information on the amount of investment attracted, the number of jobs created, and how the number of new industries compares with those that have shut down. The parliamentary response did not provide a clear comparative picture of new industrial establishments, investment, and employment against the number of companies that have closed.

This has raised questions over the need for the government to provide a complete account of industrial growth and closures in the state. Waje stated that the government must examine the reasons behind the closures, the number of jobs lost, and what happened to the affected workers.

He emphasized that merely announcing new industries is not enough and that existing industries must survive, jobs must be protected, and workers' rights must be safeguarded when industries shut down. The closure of companies in Nashik and other parts of Maharashtra has significant implications for the state's economy and the livelihoods of workers.

It is essential for the government to address the concerns raised by Waje and provide a clear plan to support affected workers and promote industrial growth in the state. The government must also ensure that workers' rights are protected and that they receive their legally mandated dues in the event of company closures.

In conclusion, the closure of 840 companies in Nashik and over 36,000 in Maharashtra is a serious matter that requires immediate attention from the government. It is crucial for the government to provide a complete account of industrial growth and closures in the state and to take measures to support affected workers and promote economic development.
