Thane Lakes Overflow: Police Warn of Safety Risks
Thane's Masunda and Upvan Lakes overflow after heavy rain, police issue safety advisory

Thane experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds over the past two days, causing water levels in the city's lakes to rise dramatically. The Masunda Lake, also known as Talaopali, has reached its maximum capacity and started overflowing, with excess water flowing into nearby markets and streets around Jambhli Naka. Similarly, the Upvan Lake has filled to its peak, attracting large crowds of tourists and residents.
The police have issued a strict safety warning due to the risks associated with the rising water levels. Despite the dangers, several visitors and children have been spotted ignoring regulations and engaging in risky behaviour, such as diving into the water. Senior Police Inspector Praveen Mane confirmed that personnel have intercepted and reprimanded individuals violating safety rules. Inspector Mane has issued an urgent advisory prohibiting citizens from swimming or entering the water and cautioning parents to keep young children away from the lake's safety walls and iron railings.
The authorities have heightened surveillance, recalling tragic incidents from previous monsoons in which youngsters drowned in Upvan Lake. The Vartak Nagar Police have warned that anyone found trespassing or entering the water body will face strict legal action. Residents are urged to cooperate with law enforcement and prioritise personal safety. The Thane Municipal Corporation had earlier activated its disaster management plan to prevent Masunda Lake overflow ahead of the monsoon season.
The situation is being closely monitored by the authorities, who are taking measures to prevent any accidents or incidents. The police are working to ensure that the public is aware of the risks and takes necessary precautions. The overflow of the lakes has also caused concerns about the safety of the surrounding areas, with excess water flowing into nearby markets and streets.
The authorities are advising residents to exercise caution and avoid visiting the lakes until the water levels recede. The police are also increasing patrols in the area to prevent any incidents and ensure public safety. The situation is being closely watched, and residents are urged to follow the instructions of the authorities and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
In the meantime, the Thane Municipal Corporation is working to mitigate the effects of the heavy rainfall and prevent any further accidents. The corporation has activated its emergency response plan, which includes measures to prevent flooding and ensure public safety. The authorities are also working to clear any debris or obstacles that may have been caused by the heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The public is advised to stay safe and follow the instructions of the authorities. The situation is being closely monitored, and residents will be informed of any updates or changes in the situation. For now, the authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and avoid visiting the lakes until the water levels recede.
