UP Jal Nigam Partners With IIT Kanpur, IIM Indore For AI-Based Water Monitoring

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards modernizing the rural water supply system by partnering with IIT Kanpur and IIM Indore.

The partnership aims to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital monitoring to make the rural water supply more effective, transparent, and reliable. Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) has designated both institutions as Knowledge Partners to achieve this objective.

According to Dr. Raj Shekhar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural), the use of technology-based monitoring and management is essential for providing clean drinking water to rural households under the Jal Jeevan Mission. He emphasized that this initiative is also crucial for river cleaning and rejuvenation.

The agreement with IIM Indore has already been signed, and the formalities with IIT Kanpur will be completed soon. With the support of IIT Kanpur, an AI-based monitoring system will be developed to detect pipeline leakages and monitor water pressure and chlorine levels in real-time.

Experts from IIT Kanpur will also recommend measures to improve the operation and maintenance of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and evaluate existing schemes to make them more efficient and sustainable. Additionally, a digital app and dashboard will be created to address citizens' grievances promptly and promote water conservation.

IIM Indore will assist in accelerating institutional and financial reforms in Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural). This will involve restructuring human resources, reducing operation and maintenance costs, and strengthening financial management. Experts will also work on developing new sources of revenue through the department's schemes.

The integration of technological innovation and modern management is expected to make the rural water supply system more transparent, benefiting lakhs of rural families across the state.

The Yogi Government's objective is to prevent water wastage through technology while ensuring quality drinking water reaches every rural household. This partnership is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The use of AI and digital monitoring will enable timely detection of issues and prompt action, reducing water wastage and improving the overall efficiency of the rural water supply system.

This initiative is part of the larger effort to modernize the water supply system in Uttar Pradesh and provide clean drinking water to all rural households.
