Mumbai's railway network to get a boost, Central Railway floats tender
The CSMT-Kurla fifth and sixth line project, a long-pending initiative, has moved closer to completion. Central Railway has invited bids for the remaining track work between Vidyavihar and Parel, with an estimated cost of ₹27.43 crore. The project, which aims to separate local and long-distance traffic, is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The project was initially sanctioned in 2008-09 with an estimated cost of ₹115 crore. However, it faced significant delays due to land acquisition hurdles, encroachments, and administrative issues. One major obstacle, the removal of 27 permanent encroachments in Dadar (East), has now been cleared, allowing work on the remaining stretch to proceed.
With the required land available, Central Railway has initiated the final phase of track construction. The selected contractor will be responsible for track laying, installation of sleepers, ballast spreading, construction of points and crossings, track linking, and final technical testing before the lines are commissioned.
