Mumbai School Peon Gets 20 Years For Sexually Assaulting Student

A special POCSO court in Mumbai has sentenced a 35-year-old school peon to 20 years in jail for sexually assaulting a Class 10 student in 2022. The incident occurred at a school located on Pedder Road, where the accused, Winsion John D'souza, worked as a peon.

The special judge, S V Sahare, convicted D'souza based on the sole testimony of the victim. The judge observed that as a staff member of the school, D'souza was in a dominant position to threaten and intimidate the victim.

According to the victim, D'souza first obtained her mobile number and started sending her morning greetings. On July 29, 2022, during the school's Annual Day function, D'souza allegedly hugged and kissed the victim backstage. A month later, on August 24, 2022, D'souza took the victim to a male restroom and sexually assaulted her, threatening to ruin her reputation and stop her education if she reported the incident.

The victim remained silent until her mother found her crying and confronted her. The mother discovered the victim's chat with D'souza on her mobile phone and contacted the school principal, who then lodged a complaint with the Gamdevi Police Station.

The public prosecutor, Vidya Bansode, examined nine witnesses, including the victim, the school principal, and medical and scientific officers. The court accepted the prosecution's case and convicted D'souza.
