Mumbai prepares for Dahi Handi, BMC reserves beds, emergency teams on standby

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made elaborate arrangements to deal with possible injuries among Govindas during the Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday.
More than 150 beds have been reserved across the BMC's major and suburban hospitals, including KEM, Nair, Sion, and Cooper.
Emergency, orthopaedic, and trauma teams have been placed on standby to handle any medical emergencies that may arise during the celebrations.
Dr Shailesh Mohite, Director of BMC's major hospitals, has instructed doctors from the surgery, orthopaedics, and ophthalmology departments to remain alert, as fractures and eye injuries are common during Dahi Handi.
The state-run JJ Hospital group has also made separate arrangements, reserving 10 ICU beds and 30 emergency ward beds for injured Govindas.
The preparations come against the backdrop of injuries reported during previous Dahi Handi celebrations, with over 200 Govindas injured in 2022, 245 in 2024, and 318 in 2025.
The BMC has directed hospitals to ensure adequate stocks of medicines, injections, dressing material, and POP are available. X-ray and sonography facilities have also been instructed to remain functional.
The arrangements cover the BMC's 16 suburban hospitals and four major hospitals, and additional beds will be arranged if required.
