200+ Volunteers Remove 1.5 Tonnes Of Trash From Navi Mumbai Mangroves

On Saturday, over 200 volunteers gathered at Karave Jetty in Navi Mumbai to clean the mangroves and mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

The cleanup drive, organised by Environment Life Foundation in collaboration with WWF-India and other organisations, resulted in the removal of around 1.5 tonnes of waste from the mangroves.

Volunteers of all ages, from 7 to 65 years, participated in the drive, which aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves in protecting coastlines and mitigating the impact of climate change.

The waste collected included plastic packaging, medical waste, cosmetics, footwear, and other debris that had been washed into the mangroves through drains and rivers.

Dharmesh Barai, founder of Environment Life Foundation, stressed that the waste collected was only a small fraction of the total garbage accumulating along the coastline. He emphasized the need for citizens to take responsibility for their actions and stop littering.

Kedarnath Ghorpade of the Rotary Clubs of Navi Mumbai also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in protecting mangroves.

The drive concluded with participants taking a pledge to promote waste segregation, reduce littering, and encourage civic accountability.

The event was supported by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and other organisations, and organisers thanked the volunteers for their contribution to conserving coastal ecosystems.
