Madhya Pradesh Paddy Output to Fall 15%

Madhya Pradesh is expected to see a decline in paddy production this year due to farmers shifting to less water-intensive crops.

The decision to opt for alternative crops comes amid concerns over the El Nino phenomenon, which may lead to water scarcity.

The state government had encouraged farmers to choose crops that require less water to minimize potential agricultural losses.

According to Bharatiya Kisan Sangh leader Kamal Singh Anjana, many farmers have preferred to sow crops like maize and soybean instead of paddy.

As a result, paddy production is likely to be lower compared to previous years.

On the other hand, soybean production is expected to be bumper due to suitable climatic conditions.

The Malwa belt in the state is facing a water crisis due to low rainfall, which may negatively impact the wheat crop.

In the last couple of years, paddy production in the state has been steady.

In 2024-25, the paddy production estimate was 136 metric tonnes, which increased to 149.71 metric tonnes in 2025-26.

Maize production also saw an increase, from 69.36 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25 to 90.75 lakh metric tonnes in 2025-26.

Soybean production, however, had been declining in the last few years, with 66.24 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25 and 59.40 lakh metric tonnes in 2025-26.

But this year, the production is expected to be higher due to favorable weather conditions.

The decline in paddy production and the expected bumper soybean harvest may have significant implications for the state's agricultural sector and economy.
