Nepal Floods Claim 469 Lives, Morgues Overflow

A devastating flood in Nepal has resulted in the deaths of around 469 people, with hundreds more still missing. The Bhotekoshi-Rasuwa flash floods have caused widespread destruction, and the recovery of bodies continues to be a major challenge for authorities.

The floods have affected several districts, including Rasuwa and Nuwakot, and the bodies of victims have been washing up in rivers as far as 100 kilometers away. The Trishuli and Narayani rivers have been particularly affected, with bodies being recovered in stretches of these rivers.

The scale of the recovery operation has exceeded the capacity of local hospitals and morgues, with many facilities running out of space. In Chitwan, for example, the existing morgues can only accommodate around 30 to 50 bodies, but more than 100 bodies have been recovered from the district.

As a result, some remains have been placed under tarpaulins outdoors, and authorities are now preparing a temporary body-management and identification centre at an unused building in Bharatpur. The facility is expected to accommodate around 250 bodies and will be equipped with air conditioning, dry ice, and controlled temperatures to slow decomposition.

The situation is also putting pressure on facilities in Pokhara and Kaski, where the combined morgue capacity is estimated to be around 88 bodies. Dozens of bodies have been transferred to facilities in the area after local morgues reached capacity.

Reports indicate that between 93 and 102 bodies have been transferred to facilities around Pokhara, where they are being stored at temperatures of approximately 2°C to 6°C. However, authorities face limited access to sub-zero facilities for longer-term preservation.

Similar problems are being reported in other districts, including Nawalparasi, Dhading, and Gorkha, forcing authorities to move bodies between facilities or establish temporary storage centres.

As the number of recovered bodies increases, families of missing people have begun gathering at hospitals and temporary identification centres in the hope of finding their relatives. Many families have arrived carrying photographs of their loved ones, which they hope will aid in the identification process.

The Nepal government is working to provide support to the affected families and to ensure that the recovery operation is carried out in a dignified and respectful manner. The situation remains challenging, but authorities are working tirelessly to respond to the crisis and provide assistance to those in need.

The floods have highlighted the need for improved disaster preparedness and response measures in Nepal, and the government is likely to face questions about its handling of the crisis. However, for now, the focus remains on supporting the affected communities and recovering the bodies of those who have lost their lives.
