"Awarapan 2" is an upcoming Hindi action drama that brings Emraan Hashmi back to one of his most-loved franchises, reprising the brooding gangster Shivam Pandit nearly two decades after the 2007 original. The film is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt under the Vishesh Films banner, the same house that made the first film. It is scheduled to release in cinemas on 14 August 2026, over the Independence Day weekend.

For Hashmi, the project is a homecoming to a role that fans have kept alive by word of mouth long after the first film left theatres. When the sequel was confirmed, the actor described "Awarapan" as far more than just another film in his career, framing Shivam's return as a deeply personal chapter. As an upcoming release, much of the story is still under wraps at the time of writing, with the makers revealing character and mood rather than plot.

The story so far

The 2007 "Awarapan," directed by Mohit Suri, followed Shivam Pandit, a haunted enforcer working for a crime boss who is asked to watch over the boss's young mistress and, in doing so, is forced to confront the memory of his own lost love. Melancholic, violent and drenched in longing, it built a devoted following over the years and is remembered as a cult favourite in Hashmi's filmography.

"Awarapan 2" is positioned as a continuation of Shivam's journey rather than a reboot, picking up the character's story years later. The first look and teaser, unveiled on 29 June 2026, lean into the franchise's signature blend of emotion and action. Beyond the return of Shivam, plot specifics have deliberately been kept minimal ahead of release.

Making of the film

The sequel is helmed by Nitin Kakkar, a National Award-winning filmmaker, marking a change of directing hands from Mohit Suri while staying within the Vishesh Films family. It was officially announced in March 2025, with principal photography running from September 2025 to June 2026 across Bangkok, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Malaysia. Vishnu Rao serves as cinematographer, with editing by Devendra Murdeshwar and writing credited to Bilal Siddiqui, with dialogues by Sanjay Masoom.

The cast pairs Hashmi with Disha Patani as the female lead and veteran Shabana Azmi in a key role reported as Nafisa, alongside supporting actors including Suvinder Vicky. Manushi Chhillar was initially in the frame for the lead before scheduling conflicts led to Disha Patani's casting. Azmi joined the ensemble late in 2025, lending the sequel considerable dramatic weight.

Music

Music has always been central to the "Awarapan" identity, and the sequel assembles a large team of composers — Mithoon, Jeet Gannguli, Amaal Mallik and Akhil Sachdeva — with lyrics by Rashmi Virag and Sayeed Quadri and background score by Raju Singh. In a clear nod to the original's beloved soundtrack, two of its most memorable tracks, "Tera Mera Rishta" and "Toh Phir Aao," have been recreated for the new film.

The first film's songs, steeped in Sufi-tinged heartbreak, are a big part of why it endured, so the decision to revive those melodies signals that the makers are courting the original's fanbase directly. As the film is yet to release, the full album and reception remain to be seen.

Why it matters

Sequels to cult films are a gamble, and the anticipation around "Awarapan 2" is driven by nostalgia as much as novelty. The film heads for a competitive box-office window, lining up against the period drama "Batwara 1947" over the Independence Day weekend, a clash widely discussed in the trade press. For Vishesh Films, reviving a title that grew in stature after its theatrical run is both a tribute and a test.

For now, the honest picture is that of a much-awaited comeback: a beloved character, a strong cast anchored by Hashmi and Shabana Azmi, and a soundtrack designed to stir memories. Whether it recaptures the original's melancholy magic will only be clear once it reaches cinemas on 14 August 2026.
