The story
Released on Eid in July 2015, Bajrangi Bhaijaan follows Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi, a big-hearted, none-too-bright devotee of Hanuman nicknamed Bajrangi, played by Salman Khan. When he crosses paths with a six-year-old girl who is mute and has been separated from her mother, he takes it upon himself to get her home. The catch, which he discovers only gradually, is that she is Shahida, a Pakistani Muslim child he has affectionately dubbed Munni, and home lies across one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world.
What follows is part road movie, part gentle comedy and part plea for cross-border compassion, as Pawan slips into Pakistan without papers and is branded a spy. Along the way he is helped by Chand Nawab, a struggling local television reporter played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, whose viral news footage becomes the film's emotional engine. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays Rasika, Pawan's fiancée in Delhi. The premise, credited to writer V. Vijayendra Prasad, keeps the politics simple and the sentiment large, letting a wordless child and a literal-minded man carry a story about faith, honesty and belonging.
Making of the film
Directed and co-written by Kabir Khan and produced by Salman Khan and Rockline Venkatesh, the film was mounted on a reported budget of around 75 crore rupees. Principal photography began in late 2014, with the Kashmir Valley standing in for the film's mountain crossings; the snow-bound climax was shot around Sonamarg and the Thajiwas Glacier, while Delhi and Rajasthan filled out the Indian stretch of the journey.
The film's biggest gamble was casting an unknown child in a role with almost no dialogue. Harshaali Malhotra, then a first-time actor, had to convey fear, mischief and longing entirely through her face, and her performance became one of the picture's most talked-about elements. Siddiqui's Chand Nawab, meanwhile, was named after and inspired by a real Pakistani television reporter whose blooper reel of endlessly restarted takes had become an internet sensation years earlier.
Music
The soundtrack, composed by Pritam with a background score by Julius Packiam, was a chart fixture in the summer of 2015. The playful "Selfie Le Le Re" became a wedding and party staple, while "Tu Jo Mila" and "Zindagi Kuch Toh Bata" gave the film its more tender registers.
The standout was "Bhar Do Jholi Meri," a soaring qawwali sung by Adnan Sami that reworks a devotional standard long associated with the Sabri Brothers. Its use in the film, as Pawan and Munni take shelter at a Sufi shrine, underlined the movie's central idea that devotion looks much the same on either side of the border.
Box office and legacy
Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a runaway commercial success, grossing well over 900 crore rupees worldwide and finishing as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2015 and one of the biggest Indian films of its era. Nearly three years later it had a remarkable second life: a 2018 theatrical release in China turned it into a major hit there too, adding hundreds of crores and cementing a cult following, reflected in its unusually high audience rating on the review site Douban.
Awards followed the acclaim. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and Harshaali Malhotra earned a Special Mention at the same National Film Awards for her debut. V. Vijayendra Prasad took the Filmfare Award for Best Story, with the film also nominated in the top categories including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor.
Why it matters
More than a hit, Bajrangi Bhaijaan landed as a rare mainstream Indian film that made warmth toward Pakistan its whole reason for being, and did so while topping the box office. By anchoring that message in a Hanuman-worshipping everyman and a silent Muslim child, it sidestepped sloganeering in favour of simple human decency.
That is why our editors call it a big-hearted cross-border tale that united audiences on both sides. It remains one of the defining Salman Khan films of the decade, and a reminder that a story about getting a lost child home can carry an outsized amount of feeling about faith, nationhood and the borders people draw between one another.
