The story

Directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra for Yash Raj Films, Pathaan is a globe-trotting spy thriller built around a wounded, exiled RAW agent (Shah Rukh Khan) who is pulled back into the field when a rogue former operative threatens India. John Abraham plays the antagonist, Jim, a disillusioned ex-RAW man leading a mercenary outfit; Deepika Padukone plays Dr. Rubina Mohsin, a Pakistani ISI agent whose loyalties are more tangled than they first appear.

Without giving away the twists, the plot turns on a lab-engineered biological weapon and a race across continents to stop it. Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana round out the intelligence-agency brass. It is a big, unapologetic popcorn spectacle — hand-to-hand fights, aerial set pieces and exotic locations — pitched squarely at the Friday-first-day-first-show crowd.

SRK's comeback and the spy universe

Pathaan carried an unusual weight for a masala action film: it marked Shah Rukh Khan's return to a leading role after a gap of more than four years, his previous lead outing being Zero in December 2018. The pent-up demand from fans turned the January 2023 release into an event, and the film's success was widely read as a rebound for Hindi theatrical cinema after a difficult post-pandemic stretch.

The film is the fourth installment in Yash Raj Films' YRF Spy Universe, following Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai and War. Its most talked-about moment is a cameo by Salman Khan as Tiger, the crossover that knitted the franchise's two biggest stars into a shared world and set the table for later films like Tiger 3. That single scene, more than anything, is why the film is credited with supercharging the whole universe.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Vishal–Shekhar, with lyrics by Kumaar, alongside background score work by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara. Two songs did the heavy lifting: the pre-release dance anthem Besharam Rang, picturised on Deepika Padukone, and the celebratory Jhoome Jo Pathaan, sung by Arijit Singh and Sukriti Kakar, which became a chart and reels staple.

Besharam Rang also drew a political controversy before release, with objections over Padukone's saffron outfit and the song's visuals; the Central Board of Film Certification asked for changes and the film went out with a U/A certificate. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, Shilpa Rao won Best Female Playback Singer for her vocals on Besharam Rang.

Box office and records

Pathaan opened to record numbers and never looked back, becoming the first Hindi film to gross around ₹100 crore worldwide on its opening day and the fastest to blow past subsequent ₹200 and ₹300 crore milestones. It went on to cross ₹1,000 crore (more than $100 million) worldwide, placing it among the highest-grossing Indian films ever made.

Reported figures vary by source and currency, but the broad picture is not in dispute: on a budget of roughly ₹250 crore, the film was a runaway commercial success in India and overseas, and one of the defining box-office stories of 2023.

Why it matters

Beyond the numbers, Pathaan reset expectations for what a star-led Hindi action film could do at scale. It reaffirmed Shah Rukh Khan's box-office pull at 57, it validated Siddharth Anand's slick, VFX-forward action template first seen in War, and it cemented the YRF Spy Universe as Bollywood's most bankable franchise experiment.

For Mumbai's film trade it was a morale-restoring blockbuster — proof that audiences would still throng single screens and multiplexes for the right event. Khan followed it the same year with Jawan and Dunki, but Pathaan was the film that announced the comeback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pathaan connected to the Tiger and War movies?

Yes. Pathaan is the fourth film in Yash Raj Films' YRF Spy Universe, which also includes Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai and War. Salman Khan's cameo as Tiger explicitly ties Pathaan to the Tiger franchise, and the shared world continued in Tiger 3.

Who plays the villain in Pathaan?

John Abraham plays the antagonist, Jim, a former RAW agent turned rogue mercenary who leads a private outfit against India. His grounded, physical menace was widely praised as one of the film's strengths. He is set against Shah Rukh Khan's title character and Deepika Padukone's ISI agent, Rubina Mohsin.

Why was Pathaan controversial before release?

The song Besharam Rang drew objections from some groups over Deepika Padukone's saffron outfit and the visuals, sparking a political and social-media row. India's film certification board, the CBFC, asked for changes and the film was ultimately released with a U/A certificate. The controversy did not dent its box-office performance.

How much money did Pathaan make?

Pathaan crossed ₹1,000 crore (more than $100 million) worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. It set several records for a Hindi film, including a record opening day, on a production budget of roughly ₹250 crore. Exact totals vary slightly by source and currency conversion.

Was Pathaan really Shah Rukh Khan's comeback film?

Effectively, yes. It was his first leading role in a theatrical release since Zero in December 2018, a gap of more than four years. Its enormous success re-established his box-office dominance and was widely seen as a turning point for Hindi theatrical cinema, which he followed the same year with Jawan and Dunki.

Who directed Pathaan and who composed the music?

Pathaan was directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. The songs were composed by the duo Vishal–Shekhar with lyrics by Kumaar, while Sanchit and Ankit Balhara handled the background score. The standout tracks were Besharam Rang and Jhoome Jo Pathaan.
