The story
"Chandni" (released 15 September 1989) is a Hindi musical romance built around Chandni Mathur, played by Sridevi in the title role that would come to define her. A luminous, high-spirited young woman, Chandni meets the ardent Rohit Gupta (Rishi Kapoor) at a family wedding and the two fall headlong in love. The first half is pure Yash Chopra courtship: song, colour, and a hero showering his beloved with flowers.
The mood darkens when Rohit is left paralysed after an accident and, fearing he will become a burden, pushes Chandni away. She rebuilds her life in Mumbai, where the widowed, gentle travel-agency owner Lalit Khanna (Vinod Khanna) is drawn to her. The film turns on the tender triangle that follows, resolved not through villainy but through sacrifice and decency. The supporting cast includes Waheeda Rehman as Lalit's mother, Anupam Kher, and a young Juhi Chawla in a special appearance.
Yash Chopra's comeback
By the late 1980s Yash Chopra was in a professional slump, having drifted from the lush romances that made his name into films that underperformed. "Chandni" — which he directed and co-produced through Yash Raj Films from a story by Kamna Chandra — was a deliberate return to the register he loved best: love, music and beauty over guns and revenge. The gamble paid off and ended his lean phase decisively, which is exactly why it is remembered as his comeback.
The film was originally conceived as a tragedy, with a bleaker second half involving a child born to the heroine. Chopra had a change of heart around the time shooting began and reworked the ending so the story closes on a note of grace rather than grief. Interestingly, the paralysis thread was suggested by Rishi Kapoor, who took inspiration from the Hollywood drama "Whose Life Is It Anyway?" Rekha had been approached for the lead before Sridevi took it on.
The music
The soundtrack, composed by the classical pairing of Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia (billed as Shiv-Hari) with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, was a phenomenon in its own right. Reported to have sold more than ten million copies, it ranked as one of the best-selling Hindi film albums of the year and the decade, and its success is widely credited — alongside "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" and "Maine Pyar Kiya" — with helping steer Bollywood away from an era of violent action and back toward melodic romance.
The title track "Chandni O Meri Chandni," the exuberant wedding number "Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Choodiyan," "Mehbooba," "Tere Mere Hothon Pe" (Mitwa) and the monsoon classic "Lagi Aaj Sawan Ki" became fixtures on radio and at weddings and remain standards decades later. A recurring instrumental love theme from the film was later developed by Shiv-Hari into "Kabhi Main Kahoon" for Chopra's 1991 film "Lamhe."
Fashion, legacy and why it matters
No single image from the film travelled further than Sridevi draped in flowing white chiffon. Although she wears white in only a fraction of her many costumes, the association was so strong that plain chiffon and net saris became known in Indian markets as "Chandni" saris, and shops sold copies by the thousand. The look launched a fashion wave that Yash Chopra would echo with later heroines, though none matched the original.
Critically and commercially the film delivered: it was among the top-grossing Hindi releases of 1989 and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while its cinematography by Manmohan Singh took the Filmfare Award from a haul of ten nominations. More than a hit, "Chandni" is a hinge point — the moment the Hindi romantic musical came back into fashion, Yash Chopra reclaimed his throne, and Sridevi stood at her radiant peak.
