The Meghna Gulzar signature

Daayra sits squarely in the territory Meghna Gulzar has made her own: sober, fact-rooted drama that resists easy verdicts. The daughter of lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar and actress Raakhee, she broke through with the true-crime procedural Talvar (2015), then directed the spy drama Raazi (2018), the acid-attack drama Chhapaak (2020) and the military biopic Sam Bahadur (2023). Daayra is her first film as director since Sam Bahadur and her third collaboration with Junglee Pictures after Talvar and Raazi.

The screenplay is co-written by Gulzar with Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal. Gulzar has spoken of the writing process as 'unravelling the greys within the black and white,' calling it both challenging and exciting, a description that fits a filmography built on moral ambiguity rather than heroes and villains. In keeping with that austere approach, the film has been reported to carry no songs, with Gulzar said to have felt the script simply did not allow for them.

Kareena Kapoor Khan meets Prithviraj Sukumaran

Daayra marks the first on-screen collaboration between Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, a pairing that has drawn considerable curiosity precisely because the two come from very different corners of Indian cinema. For Kapoor Khan it extends a recent, deliberate turn toward grittier, investigation-driven roles, following work such as the thriller Jaane Jaan and the crime drama The Buckingham Murders. Reports indicate both leads play police officers, though the makers have not detailed how their characters are positioned against or alongside each other.

Prithviraj Sukumaran, one of Malayalam cinema's most prominent figures as an actor, director and producer, takes a rare and high-profile Hindi lead here, part of the wider convergence between the southern and Hindi film industries. In behind-the-scenes glimpses released to announce the date, Kapoor Khan called the footage 'raw and unseen,' while Sukumaran teased the film's central tension with the line, 'Some lines are drawn. Some are crossed.'

Release and anticipation

Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios have set Daayra for a theatrical release on 18 September 2026, promoting it through a behind-the-scenes teaser rather than a conventional trailer in its early campaign. Anticipation rests on three things at once: Gulzar's track record with sensitive, real-issue subjects, the novelty of the Kapoor Khan and Sukumaran combination, and the pan-India appeal of a Hindi crime drama fronted by a major Malayalam star.

Until the film opens, any assessment of its story, performances or commercial fortunes remains speculative. What can be said is that Daayra arrives as a keenly watched title on the 2026 calendar, positioned as a serious-minded morality drama in the mould that has defined its director's career.
