Ikka

The story

Ikka is built around Arjun Mehra, a defence lawyer so unbeaten in the courtroom that the legal fraternity has crowned him "Ikka" — the ace, the highest card in the pack. Sunny Deol plays him as a granite-jawed man of principle whose spotless record is his identity. The film's engine is a moral trap: a private family crisis, with his young daughter's life hanging on a bone-marrow donor, forces Arjun to walk into court and defend the very man he once prosecuted.

That adversary is Shauryaman Gaur, a smooth, moneyed murder accused played by Akshaye Khanna in the kind of coiled, insinuating register that has become his trademark. Around the two leads, Dia Mirza plays Arjun's wife Avantika, Tillotama Shome appears as the sharp public prosecutor Madhura Banerjee, and Sanjeeda Sheikh rounds out the ensemble as Gauri Gaur. Though the brief promotion leans on Sunny Deol's action-hero aura, Ikka is at heart a courtroom drama — the fights here are cross-examinations, and the punches are legal ones.

The Deol–Khanna reunion

The film's biggest draw is history: it is the first time Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna have shared the screen since J. P. Dutta's 1997 war epic Border, a gap of nearly three decades. Fans had quietly wanted the pairing for years, and Ikka finally delivers it — this time as courtroom antagonists rather than brothers-in-arms.

Ikka was directed and co-produced by Siddharth P. Malhotra — the filmmaker behind We Are Family and the Rani Mukerji drama Hichki, and not to be confused with the actor Sidharth Malhotra. Made under his Alchemy Films banner with Sapna Malhotra, the project was written by Althea Kaushal (story and screenplay) with screenplay and dialogue by Mayank Tewari. Malhotra has said the role of Arjun Mehra was conceived specifically for Sunny Deol, while Akshaye Khanna reportedly agreed after reading the script in a single sitting. Shot briskly across late 2025, the film went straight to Netflix, marking Sunny Deol's headline debut on a streaming platform.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Mithoon, a specialist in brooding melody, with a background score by Julius Packiam and music released through Zee Music Company. The short album pairs the anthemic "Woh Ikka Hai" — sung by Vishal Dadlani with Raja Kumari, who also contributed lyrics — with the emotional "Papa Ki Jaan" rendered by Shaan, and an instrumental theme titled "The Battle Within."

The songs lean into the film's twin registers: the swagger of a hero introduction and the tenderness of a father fighting for his child. Released a day ahead of the film, the tracks were designed to function less as dance numbers and more as mood-setters for a story that trades spectacle for tension.

Reception and performances

Because Ikka premiered directly on Netflix worldwide rather than in cinemas, there is no theatrical box-office story to tell — its success is measured in streaming reach and conversation. Critical reaction landed in the mixed-to-positive band, with ratings clustering between two and three-and-a-half stars. Reviewers broadly agreed that the film rests on the sheer star wattage of its two leads, and several singled out Tillotama Shome's prosecutor as the sharpest performance on screen.

The recurring criticism was tone: writers at The Indian Express, Rediff and the Times of India felt the courtroom thriller slid into melodrama and 1990s-style theatrics, with a plot many viewers could second-guess. Warmer notices, such as NDTV's 3.5-star review, praised its twists and pulpy momentum. The consensus, in short, was that Ikka is carried by the charisma of Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna even when the writing does not fully match their firepower.
