Tiger Zinda Hai

The story

Set five years after Ek Tha Tiger (2012), the film pulls RAW agent Tiger (Salman Khan) and his ISI-agent wife Zoya (Katrina Kaif) out of quiet domestic exile for one last impossible mission. A group of Indian and Pakistani nurses has been taken hostage in a hospital in the fictional Iraqi city of Ikrit by a brutal terror outfit called the ISC, led by the ruthless Abu Usman. With diplomacy stalled, the two rival intelligence services are forced to cooperate, and Tiger assembles a ragtag team to walk into a war zone and bring the women home.

The premise is loosely modelled on a real and widely reported episode: the 2014 abduction of dozens of Indian nurses by ISIS militants in Iraq, who were eventually released after weeks in captivity. Director Ali Abbas Zafar uses that headline as a springboard for a large-scale rescue thriller, blending desert gun-battles and set-piece action with the franchise's signature idea of an Indian and a Pakistani spy choosing humanity over hostility.

Making of the film

Tiger Zinda Hai was written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, with a reported budget in the region of ₹130 crore. To sell the scale of a Middle-Eastern war zone, the production shot across Abu Dhabi, Austria, Greece and Morocco, building large hospital and desert sets and staging elaborate vehicular and combat sequences.

The supporting cast deepened the film's ensemble feel, with Iranian actor Sajjad Delafrooz making his Bollywood debut as the menacing Abu Usman, alongside Paresh Rawal, Angad Bedi, Kumud Mishra and Anupriya Goenka. The film also carried a note of poignancy: it featured one of the final Hindi-film appearances of the celebrated actor and playwright Girish Karnad, who reprised his role as the RAW chief.

The music

The soundtrack was composed by Vishal–Shekhar with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, while Julius Packiam handled the pulsing background score and the recurring Tiger theme. The standout was 'Swag Se Swagat', sung by Vishal Dadlani and Neha Bhasin and picturised on Salman and Katrina against Abu Dhabi backdrops.

'Swag Se Swagat' became a genuine phenomenon, racing up as the fastest Hindi film song to cross 100 million views on YouTube at the time and one of the most-liked Bollywood tracks on the platform. Coupled with the anthemic title song 'Zinda Hai' sung by Sukhwinder Singh, the album became one of the most-streamed Hindi film soundtracks of its year.

Box office and reception

Released on 22 December 2017, Tiger Zinda Hai opened to enormous numbers, posting one of the biggest opening days of the year and racing past ₹100 crore in its first weekend in India. It went on to gross well over ₹500 crore worldwide, ranking among the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2017 and one of the top Indian films of the year overall.

Critics were kinder to it than to many Salman Khan vehicles, praising the slick action, the star chemistry and Zafar's control of scale, even as some noted the film's larger-than-life logic. For audiences, it delivered exactly the crowd-pleasing spectacle promised, cementing a hit verdict and reaffirming the box-office pull of the Tiger brand.

Why it matters

As our editors note, this was the blockbuster sequel that anchored the YRF Spy Universe. Ek Tha Tiger had launched the character in 2012, but it was Tiger Zinda Hai's massive success that convinced Yash Raj Films to build an interconnected world of spies, paving the way for War (2019), Pathaan (2023) and Tiger 3 (2023).

Beyond the franchise mechanics, the film mattered as a statement of intent: a big-budget, internationally shot Hindi spy thriller that could stand alongside Hollywood action fare while keeping a distinctly Indian emotional core of two enemy nations' agents fighting side by side. Its numbers and its cliffhanger ambitions made the shared-universe gamble look not just viable but inevitable.
