Dadar Station Platform 4 Extended For 15-Coach Locals

Mumbai's Western Railway is extending Platform 4 at Dadar station by 70-80 metres to accommodate 15-coach fast locals. This move is part of the larger fifth and sixth-line project between Virar and Mumbai Central.

The extension will enable the platform to handle longer trains, increasing passenger capacity. A 15-coach train requires around 330 metres of platform length and can carry approximately 4,380 passengers. Currently, 15-coach fast locals use Platform 5 at Dadar, but once the work is completed, they can be accommodated at Platform 4.

The reconfiguration is linked to the sixth-line work, which involves shortening Platform 5 by around 70-80 metres. The existing length of Platform 5 is more than required and is obstructing the new alignment. The sixth line is being extended from Dadar towards Parel, requiring the existing tracks to be connected with the new route.

To avoid inconvenience to passengers, a new foot overbridge (FOB) has already been commissioned and connected to the existing Central Railway FOB. The old FOB had a pillar that fell within the construction area and is being removed to clear the alignment.

The Dadar project is part of Western Railway's broader preparations for 15-coach local services. Platforms at Vile Parle, Santacruz, Khar Road, and Bandra are being extended to allow 15-coach slow locals to operate up to Bandra. The work at Khar Road has already been completed, while the remaining stations are expected to be ready soon.

The changes at Dadar will also have an operational benefit beyond suburban services. With 15-coach fast locals shifted to Platform 4, Platform 5 can be used more effectively for mail and express trains. The ongoing work seeks to address two key requirements of Mumbai's rail network: increasing the capacity of suburban services through longer trains and creating additional track infrastructure to ease train operations.

The extension of Platform 4 at Dadar station is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and capacity of Mumbai's suburban rail network. The project is expected to enhance the overall commuting experience for passengers and reduce operational adjustments during train movements.

In the larger context, the fifth and sixth-line project between Virar and Mumbai Central aims to increase the capacity of the rail network and reduce congestion. The project involves the construction of new tracks and the extension of existing platforms to accommodate longer trains.

The completion of the project is expected to have a positive impact on the daily commute of thousands of passengers who travel through Dadar station every day. With the increased capacity and improved infrastructure, passengers can expect a more efficient and comfortable travel experience.

In conclusion, the extension of Platform 4 at Dadar station is a crucial step towards enhancing the capacity and efficiency of Mumbai's suburban rail network. The project is part of Western Railway's broader efforts to improve the commuting experience for passengers and reduce congestion on the rail network.
