India Notes RCMP's Remark On Nijjar Killing

India has taken note of the remarks made by a senior Canadian police official stating that investigators have found no evidence linking Indian government officials to the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The statement comes after US authorities charged jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his alleged associate Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar with ordering Nijjar's murder. This development has shifted the focus of the investigation towards transnational organised crime networks.

Last week, Lisa Moreland, Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), said investigators had not uncovered evidence connecting Indian government officials to the assassination. Her remarks contrast with allegations made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had claimed in 2023 that Canadian intelligence agencies were investigating possible links between Indian government agents and Nijjar's killing.

Responding to questions on the US indictment against Bishnoi and Goldy Brar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had noted the announcements made by the US Department of Justice. Jaiswal emphasized that India has consistently maintained that transnational organised crime, terrorism, and related criminal networks pose a serious threat to societies.

He added that India and the United States continue to strengthen cooperation in tackling terrorism and organised crime. The cooperation between Indian and US agencies has been ongoing and continues to deepen, Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing.

Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in British Columbia in June 2023. Months later, then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in Parliament that there were credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the killing. India strongly rejected the claims, calling them 'absurd' and accusing Canada of giving space to pro-Khalistan extremists operating from its soil.

The accusations triggered one of the worst diplomatic crises between the two countries. However, with the RCMP's recent remark and the US indictment, the focus has shifted towards the role of transnational organised crime networks in Nijjar's killing.

The development is significant as it highlights the complexities of the case and the need for cooperation between countries to tackle organised crime and terrorism. The US indictment and the RCMP's remark have also brought attention to the threat posed by Khalistani extremist groups and the need for countries to work together to counter these threats.

In the context of India-Canada relations, the development is a significant one. The diplomatic rift between the two countries had been widening, but the recent developments may help to ease tensions. India has consistently maintained that it is committed to cooperation with other countries to tackle terrorism and organised crime, and the recent developments may help to strengthen this cooperation.

The case also highlights the need for countries to be vigilant about the activities of extremist groups and to take strong action against them. The threat posed by these groups is a global one, and countries need to work together to counter them.

In conclusion, the recent developments in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case are significant and highlight the complexities of the case. The shift in focus towards transnational organised crime networks and the need for cooperation between countries to tackle these threats is a welcome one. The development may also help to ease tensions between India and Canada and strengthen cooperation between the two countries on counter-terrorism and organised crime.
