Thane Doctors Treat Arrested Sena Corporator Amid Protest

In a remarkable display of professional ethics, doctors at Thane District Civil Hospital continued to treat arrested Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was shifted to the hospital after complaining of chest pain. This came as a surprise, given that the medical staff were simultaneously staging a protest against Mhatre's alleged assault on a woman doctor, nurses, and hospital staff at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli.

The protest, which saw doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers wearing black armbands and raising slogans, demanded the cancellation of Mhatre's corporatorship and stronger legal protection for healthcare workers. The protesters argued that while every patient deserves medical treatment, public representatives accused of attacking doctors cannot continue in elected office on moral grounds.

Leading the hospital's response, Dr Dhiraj S. Mahangade, Additional District Civil Surgeon and Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon, emphasized that treating every patient remains the foremost duty of a doctor, irrespective of the allegations against them. However, he also stressed that treating a patient and remaining silent over attacks on doctors are two entirely different issues.

Dr Mahangade questioned why violence against healthcare workers is often normalized, drawing a comparison with the hypothetical scenario of a public representative being assaulted by their own constituents. He argued that doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers deserve a safe working environment and that the government must ensure stringent protection.

Mhatre is currently under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is likely to be discharged either on Thursday evening or Friday, subject to medical evaluation. The protest witnessed participation from senior consultants, medical officers, nurses, and employees from various hospital departments, who called for comprehensive security measures in government hospitals, speedy prosecution of those involved in assaults on healthcare workers, and strict enforcement of laws to deter such incidents in the future.

The incident has sparked outrage across Maharashtra's medical fraternity, with many demanding stricter safeguards for medical personnel. The state government has been urged to take immediate action against Mhatre, including the cancellation of his corporator membership.

The Thane Civil Hospital's response to the situation has been widely appreciated, with many praising the doctors and medical staff for upholding their professional ethics while also protesting against the alleged assault. The incident highlights the need for stronger legal protection for healthcare workers and the importance of ensuring a safe working environment for medical professionals.

In recent years, there have been several instances of violence against healthcare workers in Maharashtra, with many doctors and nurses being assaulted by patients or their relatives. The state government has been criticized for not doing enough to prevent such incidents and for not providing adequate protection to medical personnel.

The protest by doctors and medical staff at Thane Civil Hospital is a significant step towards highlighting the issue and demanding action from the government. It remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the demands of the medical fraternity and what measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The incident has also raised questions about the accountability of public representatives and the need for stricter laws to prevent violence against healthcare workers. The cancellation of Mhatre's corporator membership is being seen as a necessary step towards ensuring that public representatives are held accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, the incident at Thane Civil Hospital highlights the need for stronger legal protection for healthcare workers and the importance of ensuring a safe working environment for medical professionals. The state government must take immediate action to address the concerns of the medical fraternity and prevent such incidents in the future.
