The story

Andaz Apna Apna is a 1994 Hindi comedy written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It follows two small-town daydreamers, Amar (Aamir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan), each convinced that the fastest route out of a dull life is to marry a fortune. Their target is Raveena Bajaj, the daughter of a fabulously wealthy NRI industrialist, and the two spend the film scheming, sabotaging and one-upping each other in a race to win her hand.

What neither rival realises is that the heiress and her secretary have quietly swapped identities to test their suitors — so the men end up falling for the 'wrong' women, and love blooms exactly where the gold-digging was supposed to fail. The plot then tips into full farce when Raveena's father is kidnapped and impersonated by his crooked twin Teja, dragging Amar and Prem into a caper involving hired goons and the gloriously incompetent villain Crime Master Gogo.

The ensemble is central to the film's charm: Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor play the switched heiress and secretary, while Paresh Rawal takes a memorable dual role as the honest Ram Gopal Bajaj and his scheming lookalike Teja, and Shakti Kapoor turns Crime Master Gogo — self-described nephew of Mr. India's Mogambo — into a comic-book menace who steals every scene he enters.

Making of the film

Fresh off the success of his hard-edged debut Ghayal (1990), Santoshi deliberately swung to the opposite register, aiming for a light, cartoonish comedy. He has said he modelled Amar and Prem on the endless rivalry of Tom and Jerry and the wisecracking world of Archie comics, and much of the celebrated dialogue was improvised on set rather than locked in a bound script.

The production was famously drawn-out, stretching across roughly three years — a gap long enough to create visible continuity quirks — partly because its two young leads were among the busiest stars in the industry. That leisurely, collaborative shoot is part of why the film feels so loose and playful. In a nice piece of cricketing trivia, Sachin Tendulkar reportedly clapped the film's muhurat (ceremonial first) shot.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Tushar Bhatia with lyrics by the veteran Majrooh Sultanpuri — and remains a curiosity because it was Bhatia's only outing as a film music director. Songs such as 'Do Mastane Chale Zindagi Banane', 'Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori' and the playful 'Ello Ello' have aged into affectionate favourites.

The film also winks at its own stars through music, weaving in nods to Aamir Khan's 'Papa Kehte Hain' from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Salman Khan's 'Dekha Hai Pehli Baar' from Saajan. Playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam lent his voice to Salman's songs, part of a fruitful star-and-singer pairing of that era.

Box office and legacy

On release on 4 November 1994, Andaz Apna Apna was a commercial disappointment. Weak promotion and a crowded release calendar meant it underperformed, grossing only in the region of ₹8–9 crore worldwide against expectations built on its blockbuster cast.

Its afterlife, though, is the real story. Through television reruns and later home video and streaming, the film found the audience it missed in cinemas, and its quotable dialogue — 'Aaya Gogo', 'Teja main hoon, mark idhar hai' — seeped into everyday pop-culture vocabulary. It is now widely ranked among the greatest Hindi comedies ever made, the rare flop that history comprehensively overturned.

The devotion has only deepened with time: the plot was reworked into films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, and in April 2025 a 4K restoration returned the film to theatres for a new generation. Director Santoshi has also spoken of reviving the property with a long-mooted sequel, a testament to how alive the world of Amar and Prem remains three decades on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Andaz Apna Apna a hit when it released?

No. When it opened on 4 November 1994, the film was a commercial disappointment, hampered by weak promotion and a competitive release season, grossing only around ₹8–9 crore worldwide. It was only in the years afterward, through television reruns and home video, that it grew into one of Bollywood's most beloved cult comedies.

Who plays the villains in Andaz Apna Apna?

Shakti Kapoor plays the bumbling, endlessly quotable Crime Master Gogo, who introduces himself as the nephew of Mr. India's Mogambo. Paresh Rawal takes a dual role as the wealthy, upright Ram Gopal Bajaj and his crooked twin brother Teja, who impersonates him as part of a kidnapping scheme.

Who composed the music for Andaz Apna Apna?

The songs were composed by Tushar Bhatia with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Remarkably, it remains the only film Bhatia ever scored as a music director, yet numbers like 'Do Mastane Chale Zindagi Banane' and 'Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori' are still fondly remembered.

What is the story of Andaz Apna Apna about?

Two ambitious dreamers, Amar and Prem, separately try to marry a wealthy heiress to get rich quick, not knowing that the heiress and her secretary have swapped identities. The scheming turns to genuine love, and the plot spirals into a comic caper involving a kidnapping, an evil twin and the hapless villain Crime Master Gogo.

Why is Andaz Apna Apna considered a cult classic?

The film's loose, improvised humour, its affectionate references to other movies and its endlessly quotable dialogue gave it a life far beyond its poor opening. Decades of reruns turned lines like 'Aaya Gogo' into everyday catchphrases, and it is now routinely ranked among the finest Hindi comedies ever made.

Is there a re-release or sequel to Andaz Apna Apna?

Yes — a 4K restoration of the film returned to theatres on 25 April 2025, letting a new generation see it on the big screen. Director Rajkumar Santoshi has also publicly discussed reviving the franchise with a long-planned sequel, though the original remains the definitive article.
