The story

Released on 7 September 2023, Jawan is a Hindi-language action thriller directed by the Tamil filmmaker Atlee in his Bollywood debut, and produced by Gauri Khan under the family banner Red Chillies Entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan headlines in a double role as a father and son — Captain Vikram Rathore, a soldier wronged by the system, and Azad, a prison superintendent who leads a secret double life. The premise announces itself in the very first act with an audacious train hijacking, and never really slows down.

At its heart, Jawan is a vigilante drama dressed as a blockbuster. Azad assembles a squad of women prisoners to stage high-stakes operations that force the powerful to answer for public wrongs — farmer suicides and crushing agricultural debt, a collapsing public health system, and the corrupt nexus between arms dealers and politicians. The healthcare thread, involving oxygen shortages and children's deaths in a hospital, drew widely-noted echoes of real Indian headlines. Vijay Sethupathi, also making his Hindi debut, plays the ruthless arms dealer Kalee Gaikwad, the antagonist the father and son ultimately unite against.

The film is unusually front-loaded with women. Nayanthara, one of South Indian cinema's biggest stars, makes her Hindi-film debut as a stern police officer, Narmada Rai, while Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and others fill out Azad's all-female crew. Deepika Padukone appears in an emotionally pivotal special appearance as Aishwarya Rathore, and Sunil Grover lends comic-menacing support. For all its mass-movie spectacle, Jawan keeps circling back to a simple call to civic conscience — most memorably in a monologue where Khan turns to the camera and asks citizens to think before they vote.

Making of the film

Jawan marked a much-anticipated crossover: Atlee, celebrated in Tamil cinema for high-octane Vijay vehicles like Theri, Mersal and Bigil, moving to Hindi to work with the biggest name in the industry. The production leaned into scale. A roughly 135-foot dummy train was built at a Goregaon studio for the opening set piece, the crew shot inside the newly built Pune Metro, and filming spread across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and beyond, with G.K. Vishnu behind the camera and Ruben cutting the film.

The 2023 release capped a remarkable comeback year for Shah Rukh Khan, following the blockbuster Pathaan earlier that same year and closing with Dunki — a three-film run that reasserted his box-office dominance after a gap in leading roles. Khan's dual performance, spanning a grizzled older soldier and a charismatic, disguise-loving younger avenger, was singled out by reviewers and later brought him his first National Film Award for Best Actor at the 71st National Film Awards (an honour shared that year with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail).

Music

The pulsing soundtrack was composed by Anirudh Ravichander, the Tamil hitmaker making his own Hindi-film debut — a reunion with Atlee after their South collaborations. The album carried seven songs, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, Kumaar and Raja Kumari, and became a streaming phenomenon well before the film opened.

The mass anthem "Zinda Banda" launched the promotions with a huge dance spectacle reportedly involving around a thousand background dancers, while the romantic "Chaleya" (sung by Arijit Singh and Shilpa Rao) turned into one of the year's most-played tracks. "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" set a record as one of the most-viewed Indian songs within 24 hours of release. Shilpa Rao later won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Chaleya."

Box office and legacy

Jawan was a genuine all-India event. It posted the biggest opening day recorded by a Hindi film at the time and raced past the ₹1,000 crore mark worldwide, ending its run as the highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and one of the highest-grossing Hindi films ever made, with a worldwide gross widely reported at over ₹1,100 crore. Its reach cut across the usual North–South divide of Indian cinema, powered by a cast and crew drawn heavily from Tamil and Telugu film industries.

Critics largely praised the performances, the action design and Anirudh's score, and the film notably became the first Indian title to cross the 90% mark on Rotten Tomatoes' critics' scale. Beyond the numbers, Jawan is remembered for fusing crowd-pleasing spectacle with pointed social messaging — corruption, accountability and the power of an ordinary vote — and for foregrounding a large ensemble of women in an SRK action film. Atlee has publicly floated a sequel and a Vikram Rathore spin-off, and the movie later reached a wide home audience through its streaming release on Netflix.

Is Jawan based on a true story?

Jawan is a fictional action drama, not a biopic, but it weaves in issues drawn from real Indian headlines, including farmer suicides and deaths tied to failures in the public health system.
