"King" is an upcoming Hindi-language action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand and headlined by Shah Rukh Khan, locked for a theatrical release on 24 December 2026, a Christmas-window slot that has become Bollywood's biggest annual battleground. As of the middle of 2026 the film has not yet released; what follows is drawn from official announcements, the makers' own reveals and widely reported production news rather than any finished cut.

It is one of the most closely watched Indian films of the decade, and for a very personal reason: it teams Shah Rukh Khan on screen with his daughter Suhana Khan for the first time, in what will be her theatrical debut. Produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment alongside Anand's Marflix Pictures, "King" arrives on the back of the mammoth 2023 comeback "Pathaan," and is being positioned as another large-canvas SRK action spectacle.

The story, as far as it is known

The makers have kept the plot deliberately guarded. What is confirmed is the shape of it: Shah Rukh Khan plays a sleek, hardened assassin, and Suhana Khan plays a young protege being trained to survive in a brutal underworld under his guidance, a mentor-and-disciple dynamic at the heart of the film. Abhishek Bachchan is reported to play the primary antagonist. The project has been widely described as reportedly inspired by the 1994 French film "Leon: The Professional," though the makers have not billed it as an official remake.

The title itself was framed around a legend-of-the-underworld idea: the announcement carried the line, roughly, "wanted in a hundred countries, given only one name, King." Because the film is still unreleased, specific twists and the fuller narrative remain unconfirmed, and anything beyond this premise is best treated as speculation until the film is out.

A father, a daughter and a full house

The casting is the film's headline. Suhana Khan, who made her acting debut in the Netflix film "The Archies" (2023), takes her first starring theatrical role here, and shares the screen with her father for the first time. Reports indicate Rani Mukerji plays her mother, adding another layer to the family drama woven through the action.

Around them is a dense ensemble. Deepika Padukone joins in what is billed as her sixth on-screen collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, having come aboard after initially passing on the project. The supporting line-up is stacked with heavyweights, including Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Jaideep Ahlawat, Arshad Warsi, Saurabh Shukla, Raghav Juyal and Abhay Verma, giving Anand an unusually deep bench of character actors for a single action tentpole.

Making of the film

"King" began life as a story by filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh, who was originally attached to direct; Siddharth Anand took over the director's chair in late 2024 and reworked the script, with screenplay credits shared among Ghosh, Anand, Suresh Nair and Sagar Pandya, and dialogues by Abbas Tyrewala. Principal photography began in May 2025 and ran across Mumbai, Warsaw and Gdansk in Poland, and Cape Town in South Africa, with the production repeatedly reported as one of the costliest Indian action films ever mounted, budgeted in the region of 350 crore rupees and reportedly climbing as the shoot expanded.

The making was not without setbacks: Shah Rukh Khan suffered a muscular injury in mid-2025 that sent him abroad for treatment and pushed schedules back, and large-scale stunt sequences were staged with big crews of action performers. On the music side, Anand broke from his usual collaborators, bringing in Anirudh Ravichander for the score and the composer duo Sachin-Jigar for the songs, with Satchith Paulose behind the camera.

Why the anticipation runs so high

For Shah Rukh Khan, "King" is the next big swing after "Pathaan" and "Jawan" reset his box-office standing as an action star in his late fifties. The first look and title were unveiled on 2 November 2025, his 60th birthday, under the tagline "It's Showtime," showing him in a bloodied, silver-haired, tattooed avatar that immediately went viral and set the tone for the campaign.

Beyond the star wattage, the film carries the weight of a generational hand-off: a father launching his daughter, on his own home banner, in his own genre. For Mumbai's film-mad audiences it is shaping up to be the marquee release of the 2026 holiday season. Until it actually reaches cinemas on 24 December 2026, though, any talk of reviews or collections is premature, and the safest thing to say is simply that expectations are enormous.
